Luckington’s history dates back to King Harold (famous for being shot in the eye with an arrow) who was the first Lord of the Manor. When he became King, Luckington became a royal manor and was therefore entitled to a ‘Court’. Luckington Court still exists to this day and was used in the filming of Pride and Prejudice – as was the church (see below).

The church dates from the 12th century and it is still possible to see 12th century nave arcades resting on Norman columns, together with a massive 27 inch font (once locked against witches). The cedar trees in the adjacent Court grounds are reputed to be 400 years old.

John Thaw lived in a house near the church and was often to be seen in the busy village shop and Post Office. He loved the village and Sheila Hancock still lives in the house which they bought together.

The Old Royal Ship inn is a friendly pub just 5 minutes walk from Hunters Gate and serves excellent food.
