A Music Section for the Devonshire Association
The Devonshire Association, (www.devonassoc.org.uk) which this year celebrates the 150th anniversary of its foundation, launched a new Music Section at The Plough Theatre, Torrington on Monday 13th February 2012.
Devonshire Association Members were invited to attend the Inaugural (business) Meeting in the Committee Room.
This was followed an informal concert in the Foyer of the Theatre, featuring members
who have been working to set up the Section, including Paul Wilson and Marilyn Tucker
of Wren Music, Tom and Barbara Brown, professional performers, and organisers of
Shammick Acoustic in North Devon, award-
The new Section has plans to hold a series of prestigious events in South, North
and East Devon over the next twelve months, in order to promote the wide variety
of music that has been, or is at present being written and performed by Devon-
The Music Section is to “promote and recognise music that is indigenous to or inspired
by the County of Devon, through performance and study of all styles of music and
musicians that demonstrate a connection with the county and its particular qualities”.
It aims to organise musical events that both entertain and inform, drawing on all
types of music created in Devon, from traditional and contemporary to classical,
folk, jazz and rock. In the spirit of the Devonshire Association the section will
promote both the study of music that is rooted in the county and foster musical creativity
