Disasters, 1900-1999 |
The following is a list of principal mining disasters since 1900 but is by no means exhaustive. It includes some incidents which involved Walter and Arthur Clifford although these may not be classed strictly as disasters (Disaster officially defined as with a death toll of 10 or more). Incidents involving Walter and Arthur are shown in Red.
Disasters which occurred in the 18th and 19th Century are listed on other pages. Use the navigation pane on the left to view these.
Some links to other information about the disasters are included, some of these may take you to another web site (marked with {es}).
The data is collated from a variety of sources including "Great Pit Disasters" by Helen & Baron Duckham (ISBN 0 7153 5717 4); "Most Valiant of Men" by Fred Leigh (ISBN 1 85770 055 4) and various mines inspectors reports. Additional data supplied by David Williams

Though not in the true sense a mining disaster, this event is the one that probably most of us can remember. The accident caused by a sudden collapse of a colliery waste tip, engulfed several houses and the local Pantglas Infant and Junior school.
116 of the dead were children.
