I have worked for
20 years as a geophysicist with Enterprise Oil and BP, including periods
overseas in Norway and Peru. Extensive international experience has been gained
working on a variety of different basins, with projects ranging from basin
analysis of virgin areas, to field development. I have extensive experience in the use of workstation technology
to interpret 3D datasets and currently teach a 3 day seismic interpretation
course. I am particularly interested in the direct detection of hydrocarbons
from seismic data.
Sept
2002 – Present Consultant Geophysicist,
Lunn Upstream Consultants Ltd
I am currently working as a consultant
geophysicist. I have carried out interpretation projects for BP (Deepwater
Amazonas), Premier (Egypt), Wintershall (Deepwater Morocco) and Paladin
Resources (North Sea). I also teach a 3 day course entitled “Deepwater Seismic
Interpretation Skills”.
1999-Sept
2002 Senior
Staff Geophysicist, Technical Centre, Enterprise Oil, London
During this
period I worked extensively on international new ventures. I was instrumental
in developing the company’s portfolio in Brazil and traveled extensively to
Rio, liaising with Petrobras and the ANP. I coordinated the sub-surface
evaluation of Petrobras’ Bijupira-Salema Fields, which Enterprise subsequently
acquired. I interpreted a 2000km2 3D survey in the deepwater Campos
Basin, which lead on my recommendation, to the Curio discovery. Latterly I was involved
with new ventures evaluations, in deepwater West Africa. My exposure to
deepwater exploration enabled me to develop an expertise in rock physics and visualization.
1995-1999
Team Leader, Enterprise Oil, Lima, Peru
I was directly involved with the setup of
the office in Lima and led a technical team
responsible for Enterprise’s operated and non-operated acreage, as well as new
ventures evaluations. This included the management of several onshore seismic
surveys in difficult and environmentally sensitive areas and preparation of
exploration work programmes and budgets. My Spanish language skills and an
appreciation of Latin business culture were required for liaison with partners
and government agencies. I was able to maintain my technical skills and
developed an expertise in the interpretation of structurally complex areas in
the foldbelt and subtle structures in the foreland basins of Peru.
1993-1995 Staff Geophysicist,
International New Ventures, London
The International New Ventures Group was
multi-disciplinary team evaluating new venture opportunities in Latin America
and the Central Asian Republics. I was involved in farmins, licence round evaluations,
brown field opportunities, ground floor deals and company acquisitions, which
provided a good insight into all the commercial and technical issues associated
with the new ventures business. From a G&G perspective I interpreted
seismic data in a wide range of play systems, including the foldbelts/foreland
basins of Northern Latin America. I represented the company extensively
overseas, liaising with Government agencies and foreign oil companies.
1990-1993
Senior Geophysicist, Enterprise Oil, Norway
I was posted to
Norway as the first expatriate, shortly after Enterprise acquired Texas
Eastern’s portfolio. I worked on Licensing Rounds 11, 12 and 13 and numerous
farmins, throughout the Norwegian Continental Shelf, through which the company
built a very successful business. My technical experience was broadened by the
interpretation of several exploration and development 3D surveys and in
particular I mapped and promoted the Grieg Discovery.
1988-1990
Senior Geophysicist, UKCS, Enterprise Oil, London
Upon
moving to Enterprise Oil, I joined the Northern North Sea Team, where I worked
on 3 operated blocks for the 11th Round. A successful application
was made for one of these blocks. Based on analogues from the GOM and Germany,
I developed the new salt diapir play in the Central Graben, on the basis of
which Enterprise drilled two discoveries (Banff and Pierce).
1986-1988 Geophysicist,
UKCS, BP, London & Aberdeen
My primary duties were 2D
seismic interpretation and prospect evaluation in BP’s operated North Sea
Licences. The job required the QC of seismic processing, VSP acquisition and
the use of interpretation workstations. Latterly I was a member of a specialist
team focusing on the exploration of Tertiary Turbidites, which became a
prolific play at that time. As part of this team I worked on a sequence
stratigraphic framework for the Tertiary of the North Sea and was able to
develop my skills in this area.
1984-1986
Geophysicist, Europe, Mid East & Far East Groups, BP
During my first years in BP, I
spent time in the various International Groups, gaining experience of different
basins and plays and their associated problems. Most of my work was carried out
in close conjunction with BP’s specialist groups and I was able to rapidly
expand my technical experience and expertise. I carried out major
interpretation projects in Abu Dhabi, South Yemen, Indonesia and Denmark. I
spent 4 months working in Norway and also participated in BP’s comprehensive
training programme.
