    TIP OF THE MONTH

At the request of a member I have changed the size of the text here.See....... if you talk to me I will respond!!!

Tip-Of-The-Month (September 2009)

I recently had a problem with installing my modem drivers which I needed to do after re-installing Windows XP.The installation kept giving an error message saying a ".dll" file had a problem followed by another window telling me I needed administrators rights!I went online with another set up and found the answer was Internet Explorer 8!I therefore uninstalled IE 8 and downloaded IE 7 and BINGO I was able to get the modem installed!

Tip-Of-The-Month (April 2009)

I recently received an email with an attachment that I could not open. It was a WORD document with a “.docx” extension. The reason I could’nt open it turned out to be because I did not have the latest WORD program. I searched on the internet putting in Google:- “can’t open .docx attachment”.There I found the answer was easy. Microsoft have a free download that will allow you to open WORD 2007 with a previous version. I downloaded it and Hey Presto it worked!

Tip-Of-The-Month (March 2009)

Web Design............

was the subject of this last Monday 24th March and I would like to cover a few points for those interested. The tools you need are either a good knowledge of HTML (unlikely) or a good wysiwyg program like Dreamweaver (complex and expensive) or Frontpage (cheap and simple). Do not be tempted to use Word or Publisher or the like because they are just rubbish at it. Once you have got into learning about the need for a HOME page (always the INDEX page) and linking other pages to it you are half way there.

Decide what you want your Web Site to achieve, design your pages for each category/information, include a Contacts page etc. You will need a DOMAINE name and a HOST to get your web site up and running. It can cost as little as £6 for a domain name and hosting can be free with your ISP. It is not easy but we can help you and there is help on the internet if you are keen to learn HTML and even CSS and more.

Tip-Of-The-Month (Feb.09)
How many times have I heard
the phrase "I can't send and/or receive emails!"
Here's a pdf file to help you.Email help

Tip-Of-The-Month (Jan.09)
There has been a scare concerning Microsoft's Web Browser Internet Explorer recently which could have been a cause for alarm but swift action from Microsoft has solved the problem with an update which you should have downloaded either automatically or manually. If you have'nt updated your operating system ...DO IT NOW.The consequenses of failing to do this may be a very expensive lesson. If you wish to know more go to the Microsoft Web Site.

Tip-Of-The-Month (Jan.08)
The subject of BBC Iplayer is a welcome addition to our world and we were shown an insight into what can be done and how to do it last evening (14th Jan.08).If you need a reminder of the nuts and bolts to Iplayer then here's a small guide:-
1) Find the BBC web site-find the Iplayer section (roughly in the middle)-click on it-this should give you a new page showing the options-choose a program you want to watch and click on it-this will automatically open Windows Media Player(most likely you won't have the latest version and you will be asked to upload this).Once you have the latest verson of WMP you should now be able to watch the program-pause it to make a cup of tea- at your leisure .This is called "Streaming"(NO not the tea!!??!)
2) To be able to download a program you will have to instal the software. This takes a few minutes but is well worth doing -just follow the instructions to do this. Now you can watch it when you like and the quality will not be broken as it was on Monday. (This was due to great activity using he internet and "Streaming").Good luck-any problems give me a ring (John Tetzner).

Tip-Of-The-Month (October 07)
The subject of SPAM is a current concern to us all.To help reduce the amount of SPAM we need to change the way we forward emails. When you recieve an email that you want to pass on to others,we normally don't realise that there are numerous email addresses contained within that email, that can be used by the "SPAMMERS" for advertising or worse! The way to avoid these addresses being sent out again is 1) DELETE All NAMES and ADDRESSES showing in the email and 2) when sending "TO"- choose BCC to place all the addresses you want to send to.This hides the addresses from everyone.

Tip-Of-The-Month (June'07)

Sorry folks-"Tip of the Month" has been neglected for a while. However last week we covered the subject of BACKUP using an EXTERNAL and INTERNAL HARD DISC and I thought it worth re-iterating the wise words and a warning that come from experience of things going wrong and that is - When using Symantec GHOST it is best used at the time of a fresh re-instal of your Operating System (or a new PC of course). This is because software that has been tried and uninstalled can leave your machine in a "dirty" condition and GHOST may well make your machine crash.Having said that Symantec's GHOST IS a good way to safeguard you when the inevitable day comes when your PC crashes or slows down to beyond the frustration line and you might be thinking of buying a new PC.

Another tip for simply backing up your files, photos, music, documents and folders is to use a scheduled daily backup using a simple piece of software called KAREN'S REPLICATOR
obtainable from Computeractives download site www.computeractive.com
and it is FREE.
If you then find the need to re-instal your Operating System(hopefully Windows XP) or a fresh start using your GHOST backup you will have all you need to get back to normal.(Except for your emails which require a little more effort but can be done).More on backing up emails later.

June's (2006) Tip-Of-The-Month

Nero Home A new tool that comes with Nero 7 and it's called Nero Home, this is a handy little extra as it's like a search engine on your pc. Want to add files that might be on seperate hard drives, instead of closing down Nero or minimizing the program, Nero Home will find your files for you. For example when creating your home DVD and you want to add your own picture to the start menu of your DVD, clicking the browse button opens up a list of your folders, find it and it's done. Quick easy and simple.

May's (2006) Tip-Of-The-Month

ONCE IS GOOD - TWICE IS NOT
Each time you save a file as a JPEG you lose some data to compression. This can create artifacts-blocky areas of colour bands in your picture.NEVER save a file as a JPEG a second time.If you make a conversion to JPEG and then decide to make changes,go back to the original PHOTOSHOP FILE.Don't make changes and resave the previously saved JPEG.And if your digital camera produces JPEG files be sure to resave them in PHOTOSHOP format before making any changes.

March's (2006) Tip-Of-The-Month

Outlook Express folders can bulk up fast, increasing OE's load time and slowing its performance. But keeping folders trim means more than deleting messages. When you delete a message, it's simply tagged for removal the next time OE performs a process known as compacting. By default, compacting is automated, happening every now and then in the background. But the process takes a while and can slow down your PC's performance at an inopportune time . Instead, compact manually. First, go to Tools | Options, click on Maintenance, and remove the check next to Compact messages in the background. Then, once a week, go to File | Folder | Compact All Folders. (If you get an error message, close OE, then open it and try again.)
Using the + Symbol when searching the web. Sometimes, you want to make sure that a search engine finds pages that have all the words you enter, not just some of them. The + symbol lets you do this. For example, imagine you want to find pages that have references to both Tony Blair and George Brown on the same page. You could search this way: +blair +brown Only pages that contain both words would appear in your results. Here are some other examples: +windows +98 +bugs That would find pages that have all three of the words on them, helpful if you wanted to narrow down a search to Windows 98 bugs, rather than on Windows 98 in general. +star +trek +insurrection That would get you pages about Star Trek that also specifically mention "Insurrection," the title of a Star Trek film. The + symbol is especially helpful when you do a search and then find yourself overwhelmed with information. Imagine that you wanted to reserve a camping space in the New Forest. You might start out simply searching like this: new forest If so, chances are, you'll probably get too many off-target results. Instead, try searching for all the words you know must appear on the type of page you're looking for: +new forest +camping +reservations
.

This month I have searched other computer clubs on the Net and came up with a tutorial for you on layering/blending two images in Photoshop. I think you will be excited when you see it! Here is the link:- http//:www.wvcc.org.uk/tutes/psblend.htm

October's (2005)
Tip-Of-The-Month

You may know this already but if you don't I think you will find it very useful. The scenario is you are clogged up with files and folders and want to do a clean up job. You can of course highlight each one ,one by one and delete them but………. If you want you can highlight ALL the files at once by holding down the CRTL key. Right click on the highlighted area and click on delete. Or if you have a block of files to delete…hold down the SHIFT key-highlight the 1st file -arrow down to the last file- left click to highlight all the files in between and again right click on the highlighted area and click on delete.
