Welcome to "Sound East"

STOP PRESS - It was with great sadness that we had to announce the death of our long-serving secretary, Jo Shaw, who lost her battle with cancer in July 2009. Have a look at our News link for the latest news on the events planned for 2011.

• We produce a weekly recording on our new digital equipment for about 200 blind and partially sighted listeners with items mainly from the Lowestoft Journal, our local weekly newspaper.

• We also produce an information recording called The Informer twice a month, which gives our listeners information on a wide range of topics - weddings, sport, entertainment, planning permissions pending, food prices etc.

• A magazine recording is also produced on a bi-monthly basis, which can include interviews, outside broadcasts etc.

• All these are the culmination of efforts by teams of helpers who give their services voluntarily, with the co-operation of the Post Office "Articles for the Blind" scheme, for the collection and distribution of these tapes.

• We are always needing new volunteers, as our current ones get ill, go on holiday, go off to University etc: so if you would like to give a couple of hours of your time once a month in a very worthy cause do get in touch with the e-mail address given on our News and Links page. The jobs include registration, pouch sorting, reading, copying, recording, etc. Full training would be given for the more technical jobs. Below you can see some of our volunteers carrying out pouch sorting, registration, recording, editing etc.

We have in all six teams of helpers - four for the Newsrecording, two for the Informer, and helpers on an ad hoc basis for the Magazine recording. The studio work is carried out on Tuesdays for the Informer and on Fridays for the news recording, with volunteers coming in to the studio, carrying out their one to two hour stints some time during the day or evening; resulting in the finished product being put in large sacks for collection by the Post Office, and delivery the next day to our listeners
