Basic Training can be a little daunting. The word ‘Training’ conjures up many things to all sorts of people. Some people will remember the ‘walkies’ and the methods used by that famous trainer. There are now many schools of thought on how best to train your dog. Praise and reward, self explanatory praise and reward when it is good, ignore or at least do not acknowledge when it is not good. Clicker training, getting the dog to associate by clicking a positive action and reinforcing with a treat. Over time the reward would be removed and the dog associates the clicker as the minister for it’s commands. There are many others, some of these when I have attended seminars I have left with both fear and dread that people would be advised to use such actions on a well balanced dog let alone an introvert or nervous animal.
Here is not the place to uncover all the intricacies of dog training, if anyone has specific problems then please feel free to use the Email link and I will try and respond. During the 34 years that we have owned Weimaraners we have seen many behavioural traits within the breed. Having had dogs here for training I would say that most problems are as a result of inexperienced owners suffering a lack of knowledge, help and support. I believe that once you understand this breed then educating the Weimaraner is not a great issue. For example I was initially taught by the old method of the local dog training school. I attended my Sunday and Wednesday classes with the cairns, afghans, collies, dobes, poodles , etc..... We were all expected to learn at the same speed because we had tests to pass before advancing into the next group. When the Weimaraner is bored with repetition whilst he waits for others to catch up, he will switch off. Trainers invariably would blame the breed, pointing out what a difficult breed they are to train. I value my time spent there because it was a good socialisation exercise each week and that in itself is important in the formative years of the Weimaraner. I read extensively about training, one book that I still retain and I recall that he had a Television series at that time I was in need, this book is ‘The Family Dog’ it’s choice and training by John Holmes , a well respected trainer at that time. To become a trainer or to put it another way, in order to train you need to be able to ‘read’ your dog. Is it not carrying out this task because it is stupid ?, is it just being stubborn ? or does it not understand what I am trying to achieve ?
