2nd XI H Southwick 3
In 1932 the local council
banned adult cricket from Southwick Village Green, believing the
game to be a danger to people and property. (See 'Cricket's strangest
matches' for more detail.)
Amazing? Well, four years ago, our own Parish Council was attempting
to stop us playing.
Southwick won the toss and
elected to bat, on a wicket which was slower than usual.
In the first over David Bray bowled one opener, and the other
opener, who was looking dangerous, was caught by Sam Venn off
George Mead's bowling. A stunning catch by man of the match Brian
Joyce removed the next batsman, and Southwick worked their way
to 126 all out.
David Bray took 4-21off his ten overs, including 13 off one over,
George Mead in his farewell performance took 2-34, Chris Dibble
1-26, Martin Dibble 1-5, Roger Patterson 1-18 off 8 overs treated
with the greatest respect, Sam Venn 1-18.
We got 127 for the loss of 6 wickets. Roger Patterson dug in for
34 no, Martin Dibble 25, and Brian Joyce a dynamic 16, with 4,6,2,4
relieving the pressure and increasing the run rate.
Maximum points for the 2nd XI.
