After a fairly good start on a
damp wicket, Billingshurst started to score at a fair rate despite losing
some early wickets, but the the aid of Shane Maggs at the crease, the runs
started to come at a steady pace. Billingshurst did not quite get
the required runs to enable them to win the league and that left it down
to the bowling.
Goring 115 - 10

Shane Maggs 8

Chris Shambrook 7.2

Billingshurst set about the
Goring openers with gusto, dispatching the opener back to the pavilion
with the third ball of Goring's innings and from then on, Goring lost
their wickets in a steady fashion as Billingshurst drew closer to winning
the league. With 3 wickets down and 1 needed to win the league,
Billingshurst upped the pressure as Goring started to settle in and looked
like they were going to deny us the extra wicket needed, but sure enough,
the pressure that Billingshurst exerted on Goring was too much and they
succumbed to the pressure and the 4th wicket fell and what followed was a
mini celebration as Billingshurst had now won the Sussex Invitation league
Division 1 title. From then on, Billingshurst continued to pile on the
pressure and as the wickets fell, we knew that we were safe and once the
10th wicket fell, then Billingshurst Cricket Club began the celebrations
to announce that we are the champions of 2005.
Billingshurst won the league
title and the Sunday cup, both within a week, making this the best season
we have ever had and hopefully not the last. Billingshurst

Broadwater v Billingshurst @ Broadwater
Broadwater won the toss and elected to field.
Billingshurst 235 - 4
off 48 overs in 177 mins
John Burroughs 75
Mike Burroughs 120 off
122 balls
Billingshurst started slowly and
after losing the first wicket on 34, John Burroughs & Mike Burroughs set
about scoring at an exciting rate, adding 180 for the 2nd wicket, with
Mike Burroughs scoring 120 from just 122 balls, including 21 fours. He
scored his 50 from 62 balls and his 100 came off 111 balls. John Burroughs
added to this partnership by scoring 75 from 115 balls.
Broadwater 238 - 6
Jason Rigby 6
overs 0 mdns 37 runs 1 wkt
Shane Maggs 19.3
overs 1 mds 81 runs 5 wkts
Broadwater got off to a very quick start with most of their
early runs being extras, which ended being their 2nd highest score of
their innings, which in theory, cost us the game and maybe the league.
Once Shane Maggs came on to bowl, the run rate slowed as they tried hard
to hit the ball of the square at times. The guest bowler this week was
from Ashley Jefferies, who starts in the 2nd XI, who along with Shane
Maggs, kept the run rate to a minimum. The weakness yet again was our
fielding, which at times, was very sloppy to say the least, which resulted
in the high number of extra, with 28 runs being given away in byes.
Despite this poor display, Billingshurst only need 10 points from their
last game, Goring on the 27th August, to clinch the league from the grasp
of Findon.

August
Billingshurst v Southwick at Billingshurst
Southwick
won the toss and elected to bat.
Southwick
148 - 10 off 43.4 overs in 158 mins
Jason Rigby
14 overs 6 mdns 27 runs 2 wkts
Shane Maggs 17.4
overs 7 mdns 42 runs 7 wkts
Chris Shambrook 8
overs 2 mdns 36 runs 1 wkt
Southwick had a slow but
steady start, scoring at just over 4 and over until Shane Maggs came on to
bowl and started to dismantle the side. At one stage, Southwick lost the
middle 6 wickets for only 12 runs and then the run rate dropped to just
under 3 runs an over. Despite the rain that fell and the short break in
play, the game continued and the wet outfield caused the ball to slow down
but this did not deter Billingshurst from letting Southwick run away with
the game. This has been Shane Maggs's best bowling figures of the league
so far this season and as a result, Southwick did not look like scoring a
huge total.
Billingshurst
9 - 0 off 3 balls in 3 mins
After a very long delay
after tea, Billingshurst started their innings with the game being
restricted to only 23 overs in which we had to set about trying to score
the 149 runs we needed to win the game. The game was stopped after only 3
balls as both umpires decided that the pitch was too dangerous to continue
play as the opener bowler for Southwick slipped bowling the third ball.

6th august
Pagham v Billingshurst at Pagham
Pagham won the toss and elected to bat.
Pagham
166 - 9
Jason
Rigby 15 overs 0 mdns 33 runs 2 wkts
Shane Maggs 17 overs 4 mdns 46 runs 5 wkts
Chris Shambrook 3 overs 1 mdn 21 runs 1 wkt
Shane Maggs was the
main bowler for Billingshurst, cleaning up the openers, including on of the
openers who has been in for some time and was looking settled. After a
steady start, Pagham then wilted and lost their last 5 wickets for only 16
runs.
Billingshurst 168 - 8
Will Gooda 25
Mike Burroughs 69
Jason Rigby 17
Owen Botting 14 no
The second wicket
partnership of 87 between Will Gooda & Mike Burroughs made sure that we were
on course for the title which is now only 3 games away. We had a minor
setback back, losing the next 6 wickets with no major partnership to
mention, however Chris Polson & Owen Botting who put of just over 30 runs in
the last three overs to see us through to a much needed win.
Overall, the game was pleasing to watch and the fielding by both sides was
good with only a few slip ups on both sides. Towards the end of the game, it
was getting very tense as we only needed 6 runs to win and with Chris
Shambrook padded and ready to go out and face the onslaught of Pagham, Chris
Polson hit the winning runs with a magnificent 4 through backward square
leg.
Billingshurst now have a clear 26 point lead over Ifield and a 36 point lead
over Findon. Billingshurst 28 points |
