Gloria
The Music Makers
Two twentieth-century masterpieces by two self-taught composers are here placed in contrast. A mature work, Poulenc's Gloria evinces all of his most characteristic bitter-sweet lyricism and sardonic wit. The Music Makers, written at the end of Elgar's most creative period, sums up much of his previous music, and includes references to Enigma, Geronitius, the two symphonies and other works. Review

Haydn
The Seasons
This masterpiece of Haydn's old age followed the great success of The Creation, itself inspired by the oratorios of Handel. Although the libretto was based on James Thompson's famous poem of the same name, the work really creates a picture of Austrian rural life with which Haydn was so familiar. It evokes the changing seasons in nature and in human activity in a series of brilliantly depicted, amusing and sometimes profoundly moving tableaux. Review
