celebrating the WEA Centenary
2003 saw celebrations of the Centenary of the WEA's foundation, with many events all round the country. In March of that year, Horley WEA celebrated both the WEA Centenary and its own 35th birthday.

Many members brought items for display at Horley's celebration. The photograph shows one section of the displays which included papers written, documents produced, courses recorded, models made, events photographed, books read....

A general view taken during the celebration.

Notable events in the course of Horley WEA's history have been the discovery by the members of an archaeology course of a mesolithic site at Haroldslea (close to Horley); the finding of Orange Ladybird pupae by members of a natural history course and which has been recorded as the earliest known sighting of this pupa; and Egyptology Diploma courses in partnership with the University of London - believed to be the only occasions the University has offered Diploma courses away from Central London or with a WEA branch.
