Important Notice: Unless the minimum number of people required for a course to run (12 this year) have expressed interest in joining it, a course will not be started.

The Good the Bad and the Ugly : British Prime Ministers from Pitt to Cameron

The Early Stuarts 1603-1649 : Art, Culture and Society

The 17th century was politically a tumultuous century in British history, but it also saw a flowering in the worlds of art, literature and music. We will explore the first half of this century through the prism of the artists, writers and musicians who formed so much a part of the time, including Van Dyck amongst others. History is Myth : Discuss

This course will range widely through English literature, exploring how writers have approached the question of time and historical moment. We shall discover prose and poetry as propaganda, as witness and as the search for individual and national identity. Extracts from each text will be provided for students. Phone by 14 September

Art, Culture and Archaeology of the Holy Land

The story of ancient Judah and Israel and its sacred scriptures from an archaeological perspective. Our goal will be to separate history from legend. Through the evidence of recent discoveries we will share the most recent insights, and construct a new picture of ancient Israel in which some of the most famous Biblical events and personalities play unexpectedly different roles. Gods of Ancient Egypt

From 6 October 2011, at the Centenary Hall, Wheelers Lane, Smallfield

Fee : £158

The course will concentrate on the religious beliefs of the Egyptians. This fascinating subject embraces a wide range of topics such as the gods and their myths, the temples where they were worshipped, the rituals performed for them, along with private religion and the role of magic.
