Course Aim To study the stages that led to the unification of Egypt in 3100 BC and the achievements of the pyramid builders. Course Programme 1) Predynastic cultures of Egypt: Badarian, Naqada I-III. 2) Unification of Egypt - emergence of the Egyptian state. 3) Archaic period - dynasties I + II: arts and crafts, writing. 4) Old Kingdom begins - dynasty 3. 5) Old Kingdom - the great pyramid builders 6) Old Kingdom - dynasty 5, development of language and literature. 7) Old Kingdom - dynasty 6 - the demise of the Egyptian state. 8) End of Old Kingdom and the First Intermediate Period - periods of chaos. Planned Learning Outcomes Students should be able to know: 1) What led to the unification of Egypt 2) How many pyramids the Egyptians built. 3) The chronology of the Archaic period and Old Kingdom. 4) What led to the demise of the Egyptian state at the end of the Old Kingdom. Teaching methods Lectures aided with slides and discussions with students. Entry requirements Open to all people interested. Further study progression To participate in further courses and take a more active interest in Egyptian monuments both in museums and actual sites. Some information about the tutor I was born in the Czech Republic but have been living in the UK since the late 70's where I obtained an MPhil from University College London in Egyptology.
