Cross Hands Public Hall and Cinema is located some 400 mtrs on the Cross Hands to Porthyrhyd road (Carmarthen Road) - just take a right at Cross Hands lights if coming from the motorway. The Public Hall is on the left as you drive up the road, just past the surgery and chemist and adjacent to the school..
One of only THREE of its kind in Wales, the Public Hall was erected in 1920 and designed by an unknown Italian Designer in the classic Art Deco Style. Fully restored, the Public Hall has a fully functioning stage and cinema screen and is protected as a Grade 2 listed building. Able to seat up to 300, the stage and building is available for HIRE at a very reasonable cost. Over the years, the hall has seen a great many famous people walk its stage. Today, the Hall serves the whole Gwendraeth community by offering weekly films to young and old alike and live performances for those who like to see people perform "in the flesh". Recent performances on stage include St Michaels School, The Sound of Music by Spotlights, and Mynydd Mawr Male Voice are regular attendees at the Hall (see pictures in gallery). Of course, the more live performances the better, and we're particularly interested all events, particularly those wishing to stage concerts, pantomimes and plays.
If you wish to book this fabulous venue, please leave messages for TRACY THOMAS, on the Hall's telephone number, (to the top of the page), and she'll be very pleased to hear from you. If you're still unsure of the 'AMBIENCE' our venue can offer your event, come and see for yourself! Give us a ring, and we'll be very pleased to show you around and discuss your requirements. Our charges are among the most competitive in the county.
Although the Public Hall is one of the finest small Hall's in Carmarthenshire, and live events at the Hall are taking off, the Hall is converted into a cinema twice a week. Currently, the Cinema is open on FRIDAYS (for accompanied Children and Adults only) and also MONDAY and TUESDAY evenings at 7pm and shows the latest blockbuster films. Cross Hands Cinema has it's own website, and the latest films along with a summary of live events at the Hall can be seen at http://www.crosshands-cinema.co.uk - just follow the link for 'whats on'.
Cross Hands Public Hall Committee are firmly committed to the ongoing development of live events at the Hall. The Cinema is an important part of the Hall's work, but the Committee recognise that the Hall was built for live events and that the stage area in particular thrives on being used.
The Hall is incredibly popular and is being used on a daily basis - however there are still many opportunities for Live events, and each Saturday in the year for example has been put aside specifically for concert and other one off event bookings.
With thanks to the 'Hidden Dragon Fund', the Hall has applied for and secured its first real grant from Europe or the Government. With the money, the Hall sought advice from Sound and Lighting specialists and purchased and installed a set of state of the art lighting system and sound system. The stage area was spruced up with a new backdrop, and the whole stage area has been tidied up. The sound specialists agree that right now, we have one of the best and most up-to-date sound and lighting system in Wales and the UK.
