The Card Trick (aka The Card Player ), 1968

'The enigma posed by the three of hearts in the card trick is echoed in the questioning expression of the artist's face. Cards are not known, however, to have had any particular significance for Roberts' – National Portrait Gallery 1984 catalogue.
